Jazz At The Mercury Café (February 2009)

by Zachary L. Power

She asked me to write amazing lyrical nonsense.
I spent nearly half an hour making my way through the sticky suspense.
Holding loosely this pen and decidedly allowing my hot tea space to vent when
Suddenly, the band blasting horns, strings and snare drum began to pack it all up and began to discuss the failing economy.
Through windows, the street was alive with the sound and I saw a bus pass as the reverb resounded, resolving to play nice with my own fleeting thoughts.
Inside, the music played on as if to no cost.
What's lost from the record that spins or is spun?
What dispute can arise from these swells of air?
No ill effect can I trace from the tips of their fingers, and
You would never have known not to look for a singer.
